Photographic memory

Mixed media (found photo album and unfixed lumen print on expired photographic paper), 2023

The removal of any subject matter leaves us to reconsider the familiar and contemplate the photograph in its elemental state, as an object in itself; chemically coated paper that reacts to light. Using the oval aperture in the photograph album as if it were a camera, the paper is exposed over several days. The resulting photograph is left unfixed and so will gradually change colour and fade over time. This “empty” photograph, housed in an empty photo album, allows the viewer to recall their own family albums, and all the images and narratives such recollections might bring to mind. Photographs held in our memories, memories held in our photographs, like afterimages gradually fading with the passing of time.
